Neutral Impact {[More]Dots & Colorblocks}

28 Nov

One day, I will get over dots. But today is not that day, friends.

I’ve been trying to think through why I’m so attracted to dotted patterns.  I think it’s the idea that such a simplistic pattern creates something so graphic. More and more, I’m taken with this idea that impactful dressing is not necessarily just about color or skin, but rather about employing wit, boldness and discipline to  combine small, (but great) details that build, one upon the other. I’m not necessarily saying I’m the master of this school of thought, but I will say that I’m an apt pupil.

From the Heart {Merino Wool & Chiffon}

As promised, I wanted to share my take on one of the skirts I scored in my recent Target haul.

Clothing really is what you make it. A cheap (and arguably matronly) polka dot full skirt, gets quirky real quick when paired  with the unexpected.

Spots on dots for shoes, a sweater in bold colors and barely there jewelry that still makes an impact, does the job.

(big hair and hot pink lipstick is, of course, optional).

By Sea or By Land {Stripes & Pleats}

23 May

Sometimes, I love a combination of neutrals. In fact, I think done right, a melange of neutrals can have pretty strong fashion impact. So, last week’s amazing weather had me reaching for a nautical look.

Also, this skirt feels like wearing sweats. You know about my penchant for ensembles that look like business and feel like casual.

Addi’s Armoire {Shop My Closet}

3 Apr

I was going to begin this post by talking about an overly clingy girl at my high school who never respected personal space and always lured people back to her locker–which happened to in be an alcove of sorts–for long conversations. I would have further said that because of this, we secretly referred to her as ‘Come Into My Alcove’ and we said it with Dracula’s accent.  And so, now that I have finally opened my online shop, Addi’s Armoire,  I sort of feel like that girl.

But, that would be weird and irrelevant.  Plus, everyone is kind of bizarre in high school.

So, instead let’s start the post here; I opened a lil’ online shop!  I’ve started with a few pieces and I have a bunch more. There’s something for everyone–from Walmart to Diane Von Furstenberg, from size 10 to size 24.

So, happy shopping–here’s hoping you find something you enjoy.

Can’t Hardly Wait

9 Mar

Seems like Winter can’t wait to yield to Spring and frankly, neither can I.

Unseasonably warm weather coaxed me out of black jeans and engineer boots and into something a lil’ different.

New favorite color blocking combination? Citron and Royal Purple. Now, for clarity–citron is NOT just yellow. Citron is more like…a miscegenated lime and yellow.

‘Limellow,’ if you will.

Anyway, it’s so loud and fun and maybe, a little left of the standard colorblocking combo, which I dig.  Lately, I’m flirting shamelessly with colorblocks that combine a super-saturated color and a muted version of  another.

So, for example, instead of a royal purple and a royal blue, I’m thinking royal purple and say…turquoise or sky blue. Or a blood red and a pale pink.

Let see how it plays out.

When I was younger, MamaCurve would say that a “Winter” 60 degrees wasn’t quite the same as a “Summer” one. I used to think that made no sense–60 degrees is 60 degrees, right?  But in retrospect, she was onto something–unseasonably warm Winter temps still carry a cool breeze and are known to drop at an instant.  So spring colors notwithstanding, the blazer is still a sturdy and toasty wool one.

Although I kept flats close at hand, I did teeter into the streets on these stilts for some time. I had a guy come up to me an ask if I was from California, which was weird. Perhaps it was the lack of dark colors and completely inconvenient shoes that did it?

Cozy Chic: a rumination on playing favorites

6 Mar

This past weekend, I wore a combo of my very favorite things all together.

Unruly hair and a statement earring (‘earring’ not said in singular, you know, in that gratingly pretentious way–literally just the one earring)

A big scarf, a midi dress (and apparently, one untied shoe)

my very favorite jacket and new favorite boots (Hands down, the most comfortable ‘high heeled’ anything I’ve ever encountered),

a generally sunny disposition and an ability to dance, on command, without music.

Bonus points for the fact that everything I have on is some sort of jersey/cotton mixture and I’m wearing all my favorite colors (particularly the dress, the color of which I’ve dubbed, ‘Rusty Skin’)

As always, thanks for reading; talk soon.

The Curve and the Line (how meta of me)

29 Nov

My blog’s name actually comes from a phrase within a song; I never thought I’d use it in any other context. But when I saw this shirt by Butter by Nadia, no other  title seemed as a propos.Nothing makes me as happy as a stripe made saucy.

I know this top will play well with others, but loved the idea of it with a tapered trouser (a trouser so comfy, I wore them as sweats on a plane last week) and simple heel.

But guess what I discovered when trying to take the shirt off?

shirt flipped upside down+exaggerated cowl= unexpected dress!

(another acceptable answer for the aforementioned equation is = Happy Addi)

Thanks for Reading!

Top/Dress: Butter by Nadia

Fit Tip: Butter is one size fits all, but this shirt is super-snug on me in the arm area. So, if you’re any larger than a 16 (maybe a smaller 18) on top, it’ll be tough goings to get into the piece.

Pants: Gap

Shoes #1: Max Azria

Shoes #2: Casadei

Earrings: Fennimas

Before I Let You Go

5 Oct

When I was just a Teenage Curve, I came up with an arbitrary rule about hosiery. I decided that from April 15-September 15  , I could go on hosiery-hiatus, and it would be acceptable for me to go bare-legged. Any time thereafter, it was all hosiery, all the time.  For more than a decade, I kept that rule and then this year, I broke it.

I went to a party on September 22 in a pair of shorts. It was apparently the first cold night of the year and I froze. A week later, I wore a super cute skirt to an event and then found out I was inappropriately dressed because the event REQUIRED hosiery.  Yikes.

Sometimes, rules are made to be broken. Sometimes, they really shouldn’t be. So, what follows is a fond-farewell to 2011′s bare leg. You will be missed, m’dears.

I mean, if this is the last time I plan to wear a bare leg for the season, I thought I’d go out with a bang with the hi-low skirt I got this summer. Never quite got to wear it as skirt when I bought it; interestingly, I had it hiked up over the bustline as a flowing strapless top over jeans and shorts.

But worn in its actual form, it’s quite beguiling. Part mini, part midi, it’s the perfect skirt for the indecisive.

Not so sure I like the proportions of the full sleeve with this skirt, but it does the trick for now. Next time, I want to try the skirt with something sleeker.

Naturally,  a monster post about dope hosiery options this way comes.

Until then, thanks for reading!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to a Meeting

29 Sep

So, you’ll remember earlier this week, I proclaimed this the Autumn of Primary Colors and resolved to shop as such. Except, on the way to a meeting,  I bumped into Anthropologie. And, of course, the  sheer force of me bumping into a building, made me ricochet into Kate Spade.

No, it’s not lies; it’s shopping Science.

So, I had my first hiccup in my Autumn shopping  work plan.

I already have plans for the blouse–there are a great many ways this can work for the Autumn/Winter months–but neon pink, patent leather, pointed-toe Mary Janes? Although a magical combination, that may be a bit tricker. I’ll keep you posted.

Until next time, friends…

Fall Fashions {p.1}

26 Sep

The other day, I eyed a wool coat as a viable and weather-appropriate top layer for my journey to the great outdoors; I do believe Fall is upon us.

Last season, I approached shopping without a plan. Well, maybe there was a plan but it was flawed. Essentially, this was it:

1. See it

2. Lurve it

3. Buy it.

And that plan is not inherently wrong. The problem is when utilized as a ‘Plan A,’ at the end of the season, you’re left with a pile of unworn pieces that, once full of potential, are now kind of irrelevant for another six or so months.

So for Autumn, I’m going to use some of my experience as an over-planning, non-profit professional to shop a little smarter.

1. First thing every non-profit professional knows is that you have to begin planning with the end in mind. Meaning, start planning by thinking about what is it you’d like to ultimately accomplish and then plan your work to get you there.

For me, this picture is the look I’d like to ultimately accomplish this season:

Nevermind the blonde part.  Or, the ‘but, it’s Nicki Minaj’ part (if that bothers you). This picture combines warmth, decadence, vibrant and fearless  use of color and comfort.  J’adore.

So, here’s what I’m thinking so far:

Primary Colors  (Curve-Conscious Dresses, specifically):

I’m so excited about red, green and blue for the winter months. They are vibrant, super playful and can pack a punch when everyone else is somber hues.

Some favs on my radar:

ASOS

So excited about the button detail in the back of this.  Totally plan to wear this backwards.

Monif C. Emme Ponte Dress in Navy

Come on. This red geometric detailing is gorgeous.

Lux Fabrics ( Leather, specifically):

Everyone is crazy for leather these days. It’s a bit of a challenge to find great leather pieces for curvy girls, but I think I may have found something interesting. Make Your Own Jeans apparently, custom makes leather pieces for anyone, of any size in darn near any color of leather.

Check out my picks below:

High-waisted, pleated leather shorts? Perfection. If they would consider changing the color of the button closure,  and perhaps another sort of leather,  we’d officially be in business…

This pleated leather skirt is my fav find thus  far. And the best part, each piece is 79$. Not sure of the quality of leather, but 79$ for custom-made leather pieces is nice indeed. I will be placing my order shortly.

Great Blouses in general (Pussybow Blouses, specifically)

I’m SO happy these are on-trend. I’ve loved them forever. Such a great way to add a pop of color an outfit AND  (in the case of the pussybow blouse) a great excuse to fashion a bow.

Leifsdottir

Also comes in red but more striking in the black and white, I think.

Robert Rodriguez at ShopBop

Totally outside the color scheme I discussed, but, seriously; look how pretty!

ASOS

You guys know how I feel about a hi-low hem.

This is just part 1, but I couldn’t wait to get the ball rolling.

What’s on everyone else’s shopping list? Feel free to share with the group!

Thanks for Reading!

Addi
